I may climb up Brinkies Brae on this midsummers night, to see the over-brimming of the year's well of light. (No, actually the over-brimming takes place at noon; at midnight, in the north comes the magical joining of the fires of sunset and dawn).

Stromness facts

Stromness piers and jettiesThough The Orcadian has served as the islands newspaper since 1854, Stromness once had it's own newspaper too! The Stromness News ran for six months in 1884, and contained news (around two
columns of which were about Stromness) reports on Parliament and London Society, a serial story, ladies columns, humour and interesting facts.
Stromness also once has it's very own Ba game - but the rough sport was abandoned after concerned merchants in the town had just installed plate glass windows.

Franklin's View dining tableWe enjoyed our stay in this cottage so very much. It is comfortable, scenic, tasteful, practical and so well placed for visits to Stromness. It was a tremendous place to be for 'Shopping Week' and the weather was pretty good for the most part. We will remember our stay here very fondly. MORE
